Alte Oper

Alte Oper (Opernplatz, Frankfurt) – opened in 1880, this was Frankfurt’s original opera house (designed by the Berlin architect Richard Lucae, which included a panther quadriga – which was reminiscent of the famed Semper Opera House in Dresden). At the time the 34 meter high building featured a large auditorium and a sumptuous staircase, known as the ‘Imperial Staircase’. The auditorium could seat more than 2000 people, and was considered one of Germany’s major opera houses. Bombed during World War II, reconstruction was not completed until 1981. Various classical music events and operas are currently held here. See its website for upcoming events: www.alteoper.de
